We are delighted to offer Manual Handling Training to Residential and Nursing Homes, as well as local businesses.  Course tutor Mary Tebb has been a manual handling instructor at Spire Southampton Hospital, formerly BUPA, for over 10 years, as well as being an experienced Chartered Physiotherapist specialising in musculoskeletal conditions. The course takes approximately 3 hours to complete.

Introduction

Aims of training
Definition of manual handling

Basic anatomy of the spine and age related changes

24 hour back care: care of the spine throughout the day and night including when not at work. Management of acute mechanical low back pain; persistent low back pain management.

Ergonomics

Including office / practical space at work and at home; people’s size differences; development and management of repetitive strain injury.

Legislation

Briefly touch on Health and Safety at Work Act and more detail on The Manual Handling Operations Act (1992) with an emphasis on the obligations of both employer and employees. Mention any relevant local policies.

Risk assessment

Local examples from the workplace; use of “LITE” assessment and resultant action plans and safe systems of work, tying this in to legislation.

Practical session

Covering all basic manoeuvres undertaken by staff such as sit to stand, moving up the bed, assisted walking, bed to chair, rolling and hoisting. Emergency procedures such as chair to floor.  This is done in groups of 2 or 3, where staff are given scenarios to work through and present to the group.  However, if staff are new to a health/caring role, manoeuvres are first demonstrated to them and then practiced by the staff.

Certificates and course evaluation

Course Certificates are issued and feedback is sought from course participants.

This is a practical course, participants who are pregnant or who have medical conditions that affect their ability to participate in the practical session should inform the course organiser. Participants should be dressed appropriately in loose fitting work clothes.
